I just realised

You can get to anything on my website within three clicks!
Say you wanted to view Boo's profile

Wow I didn't realise until today! This is great!

My trailer

My trailer is about 1 minute long. It features the track 'We Speak No Americano' by Yolanda Be Cool & D Cup. I feel that this soundtrack suits the trailer because of the upbeat rhythm and the PERFECT ending! Right when the trailer ends, the song stops right before the chorus. The track is also in a different language and it adds to the foreign-ness of BB's world.
My trailer features two animated scenes extracted from the movie. The first is BB in Boo's room, asking whether Boo wants to join her on a trip to the beach. The second is the first scene of the movie where BB is created. I like the scene in Boo's room because the audience gets a glimpse of two characters and the way they communicate. It also shows a beach and a sleepy Boo in thought bubbles. I think the scene where 'BB is born' is appropriate because the audience gets to see a close up of BB's face. They also see the phrase 'BB is Born' as she rolls out. The trailer stops with the audience intrigued as to who BB is, as not a lot of information is revealed in this trailer. It's exactly how I wanted it to be.
When researching trailers, I found that there was quite a bit of use of words; mainly quotes and intriguing phrases as well as rhetorical questions. I added phrases like 'A world where inanimate objects become animated' and also added a few narcisstic quotes. The trailer looks authentic because I also added 'this trailer has been approved for all audiences' picture which is in front of all trailers! I used all those elements to make it look authentic.
Overall, I believe my trailer is one of the strengths of my website because of the reasons stated above.

Evaluation

I believe my website was to the best of my abilities in the period of the five weeks we had to complete the assignment. I really like:
  • My quiz. I think it was an original idea and it was well executed. It took a while to come up with the questions, make the hyperlinks, create screenshots of pictures, make individual pages, rename them so I wouldn't get mixed up, and finally, create a congratulations screen. I believe my quiz is one of the strong points in my website.
  • My trailer. I love it! It's perfect. I really like how the music and trailer stop at a climatic point and it all comes together beautifully!

I don't really like:

  • My synopsis... It's not as detailed as I would've liked. It was really good on my previous website but unfortunately, it got deleted.
  • The repetition of icons. The home icon appears on almost every page on the website. Also, the character icons are the same as the icons on the home page.

If I had more time, I would:

  • Create different home page buttons for variety
  • Change the character icons so they would not be the same as the ones on the home page
  • Create a custom layout
  • Add more pictures!
  • Add more questions on the quiz (maybe make another one?)
  • Maybe make another game (if I have enough time)
  • More movie posters (and improve them!)
  • Better synopsis

Overall this has been a really fun term but it got stressful towards the end. Oh well, at least I learnt the importance of time management!

Over the weeks...

On Thursday (the original due date for the assignment) I handed in my website. I was the eighth (my lucky number!!) in the class to do so. I took a laptop home on wednesday night to work on my assignment because last time I almost completed it, the computer froze and the rainbow pinwheel of doom came up... I was really sad because my website was looking really good and my character profiles and synopsis vanished :( I guess I'm kind of glad that the iWeb didn't save because if it did I wouldn't have taken a laptop home to improve my website! Now it's just perfect in every way shape and form (well perfect for me anyway) my old website was certainly not to the best of my abilities. I'm quite happy now with my work and am even happier to have all this weight off my shoulders. I spent most of week 4 doing the trailer, as it kept playing strangely and I had to somehow fix it. I *finally* finished it in the first lesson of week 5 and moved onto finishing my website with the ideas I had in the first few weeks. I began adding hyperlinks so the website comes together smoothly. With the help of photoshop, I finished making the poster for the home page. It's basically just BB about to jump into the water the moment the 'rain' comes. I really like the picture because the audience doesn't know what will happen to BB next. I decided to make a second poster. I made this one more mysterious, by having a close up of BB's domain. The words 'coming soon' are written on the doors of the house and the on the side it says 'BB + BOO' to indicate who lives there. I quite like this poster as it is intriguing and mysterious. I made it with photoshop and it was quite simple to do.

Website update

I've been working on my trailer lately. I plan on finishing it next lesson. However, I also have to add sound. Thats the problem... I cannot find a suitable song. I might use 'We Speak No Americano' by Yolanda b cool & Dcup. I prefer using instrumental songs because words kind of ruin the meaning of the movie, the idea of surrealism. 'We Speak No Americano' has got limited lyrics, and it is in a different language! Perfect! (I don't think many people understand Spanish in St Hilda's) So, it will help ensure that the viewers identify BB's world as surrealistic. So, I'll edit the song and make it shorter. So far, my website is going good. I am writing the synopsis now. My *current* website has faced no problems yet so I'm very happy. Hopefully it won't because I can't afford to lose anything right now. I'll keep this blog updated on my progress. I've also messed around with colours and shapes on my blog. I've made an awesome colourful frame! It's pretty cool seeing what you can do with iWeb.
Last week, I spent a lesson working on my website. I saved it... and Mr Powell closed it. I panicked (I did an awesome frame effect!) and unfortunately, the file could not be relocated. Just what I needed. So, I had to start over. I am choosing a black background for all my pages because I think it makes my movie stand out. And also, I like white writing on a black background. Right now, I'm working on my trailer. It's quite frustrating to do, because I need to use imovie and my soundtrack has gone! Anyway, my trailer is going to be about 30 seconds long and it will feature a climax. The climax will of course, be where BB is standing at the edge of the basin. The question the audience leaves with will be 'what will happen next? Will BB be ok?' This is the ideal reaction. Next lesson, I hope to have completed my trailer and I will move onto making my pages and writing my synopsis. I will also need to use 'Grab' (a program in which you can screen shot and then save the image) to insert pictures from my film onto the website. It's due in week 6... I think I'll have it done by then! (hopefully)

My website!

Today I started making my website. Mr Powell showed me how to make trailers. You have to cut them in Quicktime to make the trailer. I'm going to do it next lesson. Today I have made a few pages including my trailer page (I have to do my trailer too!) my character profile main, BB's profile, Boo's profile, my profile and home. I have a good basic idea on what my website will look like. I think a character profile page would be pretty cool. The page will have a brief summary on each character: BB, Boo, bendy man, flying cow and pig. It will also have a picture in place of the scuba diving man... I am planning to use 'grab' to take snapshots from my film to use in the icon for the character that people click to they can view it. I will then include a bigger picture in the actualy profile. I haven't added hyperlinks yet but plan to in the near future. My trailer page will have a brief synopsis under it and I've made a random frame around it... it looks pretty. The trailer won't be very big in size or it won't load fast and it will pixelate! The home page will be very simple. It will have a poster on it and may be a sentence or two about the movie. I think 'BB + backpack = adventure' is a good summary of my movie as the backpack is vital for BB's adventure! Oh also, I've decided to make BB a girl instead of 'gender reamains mysterious' because it gets annoying having to repeat BB over and over again. It's visually unappealing and it will get annoying reading it. Anyway, I hope to finish my trailer and website soon :)

Websites!

This term we are doing websites. We're creating a website for our movie. He taught us the 3 click rule: if the person cannot get to the page they want within three clicks, they will leave the page. He also said that we read from left to right, and showed us examples of movie websites. The first thing we noticed was what was on the top and on the left. Our eyes are used to reading left to right, top to bottom. So, our eyes have focused onto the content there. This is why titles are usually at the top, just to put forward an example.

This information will greatly help me for making my website!

The changes I have made in my film

At the start of the semester, I made a storyboard. Looking back now, I have made several minor changes in my storyline.
  • BB only sees Boo once before exiting the house
  • BB's phone is not parked, instead, it comes to BB.
  • BB does not abseil down the mountain. I found that a flying cow is a more interesting alternative. Also, watching an eraser abseil down a mountain isn't the most interesting scene in an animation
  • BB does not climb up the mountain. Instead, I found a pig marker similar to the cow one. I thought it would be a good idea if it was well executed.
  • There is no foam in the waterfall, only rain from a human coming in and using the tap and splashing the water everywhere. The person is wearing dark clothes, and is meant to resemble a rain cloud.

That's about it! Looks like this is my last blog post for the term :( I've had a great time doing stop motion and I have come up with the best idea for next year!

Inspirations!

My inspirations:

BB = Smiggle ghost eraser. My favourite is the pink tear drop shaped one because it is cute and I like the design. Whilst experimenting in term 2, I realised that the eraser would be hard to animate, as in make the face move and show expressions. So, I decided to make my own BB. Mr Powell perceived BB to be one thing, and I perceived it to be another. In the end, I went with what Mr Powell suggested, BB with a big nose and moustache.

Boo = Smiggle ghost eraser. I used the originial eraser, not a copy I made. I really like the eraser which was Boo. It was different to the design of BB and I thought it'd fit perfectly on the pre-designed bed I had made in class.

BB's room = I thought the idea of a scribble as the wallpaper would look good in comparison to Boo's room which was an organised purple pattern. I made the bed very odd looking with a yellow pillow because I've seen one like it in a magazine and I thought incorporating a similar design into my film would make BB's room look more modern. There is also a rug in BB's room with I just made out of leftover plasticine I had.

Boo's room = Purple is my favourite colour, so I decided to use it as the wallpaper in the first room I made (which turned out to be Boo's!) In this room, there is a window, bookshelf and poster of an unidentified eraser who Boo seems to adore. I found the picture of Boo's crush on the internet and thought it was very cute, and Boo should like it. The empty bookshelf is a symbol of no knowledge of the human world. Humans are avoided by all erasers and other useful objects for purposes of keeping their world a secret, for erasers and other 'inanimate' objects are wise enough to know that there would be terrible exploitations if ever humans encountered BB's actions. The window is sea view, to show the beach- the location BB wants to get to.

Phone car = my experimentations with stop motion (I made a video with Meghna about BB and the phone) so I decided to use one of my old phones. This fits in with the 'inanimate objects come to life' theme.

General story line = I was brushing my teeth one night and came up with the idea. I thought that an epic journey from the top of a chair in the corner of my bathroom till the sink on the other side could work. I set up the chair, made the house and visualised the idea. I had pictured it and estimated that it would be around 1:30 or so. The storyline is also based on a true story. It was an event that had once occurred to me. I, personally, was getting ready to go to see a movie with my sister. She took forever to get ready! We got through many traffic lights and we finally came to the cinemas after we got snacks. The tickets were sold out and it was the last session of the day. Me and my sister were really sad that this event happened so we just went home.

Flying cow and pig: When I tried to make BB abseil down the chair and up the counter, it didn't work! BB kept falling off the string, leaving marks on the chair and sliding down... so I had no idea what to do. I was cleaning my desk and found these markers that I got when I was in grade one! (They still work, talk about quality!) I thought that they could be the solution to my dilemma and decided to make wings, attach them to string and make them 'fly' down. This idea was executed successfully (except for one part where you can see the string...)

Bendy man: Similar story to pig and cow, found him sitting on my desk

Bendy pencil: See above

Pacman!

Part of my soundtrack for my movie is (techno) pacman.

So, I decided to do some research and see what amazing stopmotion they have done

Amazing! It would not have taken too long to do though. However, it does look fantastic and a lot of work has obviously been put into this project. It made me laugh and I thought the idea was fantastic and well developed into stopmotion. I like the use of humans to do this sort of stopmotion, because it looks original and incredible!

The final

My film is finally complete! All I have to do now is submit it. My film is due by the end of this lesson, so I am on track. I fnished my soundtrack last night and the voices are complete. I will upload the film once I change the credita (for privacy purposes)

Dilemma

My file went corrupt. What does this mean? All my work for the past lesson does not work anymore. It didn't save properly because I was forced to shut down my laptop. My solution to this problem is to borrow out a laptop on Wednesday night. I need to record the voice of BB again, and edit the soundrack. This came as a very devastating surprise, and with all the stress of other assignments being due and tests occurring, this is not the ideal situation to be in. All I can do now is remain calm, and re-record most of my sound track with my film being due in two days.

My Film

My film is now complete. I am satisfied with it, although I do believe I could have achieve a better film. I like my character, BB. However, I could have filmed better. The camera went very shakey in the part of the film where BB tries to jump onto the sink, but instead, lands back down onto the counter. Then BB goes up the pencil and the camera adjusts back into being not as shakey. Camera work is frustrating because I could not find a good surface to put my camera on without it falling! I refilmed my film... but that still happened! If I were to remake this movie, I would use a lot of blu tak, sticky tape and string to make sure the camera doesn't do what it did. I would also edit the scene where the cow is bringing BB down because the piece of string I used to make the cow 'fly' is visible because of the light. I could have photoshopped it to make the string disappear! The soundtrack... the voice... sounds... strange. I wish Mr Powell did the voice, as when he demonstrated the gibberish sounded really good! I liked the pacman soundtrack, it was exciting and suited my film. However, in the break of the music I didn't know what music to put, so I used my voice, a beat and a synth bass. The bass was consistent throughout the whole film. If I were to redo my soundtrack, I would use a different person to voice BB.

My progress

My assignment is due this Thursday. My progress so far is good, however, I need to complete the soundtrack ASAP!

I have done:
  1. Opening and closing credits
  2. Opening animation title (animation-ish)
  3. Introduction (Stop motion: BB is born)
  4. Scene 1 (Stop motion: BB wakes up)
  5. Scene 2 (Stop motion: BB asks if Boo wants to go to the 'beach')
  6. Scene 3 (Stop motion: BB is back in room, checks backpack)
  7. Scene 4 (Stop motion: Checklist of items in BB's backpack)
  8. Scene 5 (Stop motion: BB puts on backpack and rolls out of room)
  9. Scene 6 (Stop motion: Doors open, BB exits house. Flying cow comes and takes BB down)
  10. Scene 7 (Stop motion: After cow leaves, BB is picked up by phone and drives away)
  11. Scene 8 (Stop motion: Phone travels)
  12. Scene 9 (Stop motion: Phone leaves BB on carpet, BB rolls down carpet, BB is picked up by flying pig)
  13. Scene 10 (Stop motion: BB attempts to get up onto sink, after a failed attempt, a bendy man lets down a pencil to help BB get up)
  14. Scene 11 (Stop motion: BB is up and starts rolling)
  15. Scene 12 + 13 (Stop motion: BB is rolling around perimeter of sink)
  16. Scene 14 (Stop motion: BB rolls out towel, then checks the water temperature. BB finds that the temperature is good, then puts on a blue swimming cap. Just as BB is about to jump in, rain starts. BB packs up her belongings and is shown with a miserable look rolling home)
  17. Closing credits
  18. Sound for opening credits-scene 5, scene 13-closing credits

I have encoutered a problem: composer's block. I need Mr Powell to star in my movie! I want him to be the voice of BB as I had failed miserably! If he chooses to do so, all I need to do is edit the credits at the end and mention that he was a special guest. Using a voice will not only enhance my movie, but also entertain the audience.

Filming

I have finally finished filming!!!

Now all I have to do is edit, sound and finishing off the animation-ish title. I'm very happy with my progress and now I am certain that my film will be finished by week 10. This week I am going to finish editing- I need to cut out frames/insert frames/edit frames using photoshop. If I finish editing before the end of the week, I will start on sound early. The good thing is that I have already experimented with sound over the holidays, so I have a good idea of what my music will sound like. Now that I have refilmed my movie, the camera work is much better and so are the movements. I am very happy with my progress so far and am sure that I will submit my full assignment in week 10.

Next lesson...

I am going to finish filming my film... I need to film BB and Boo and all will be well. BB is going to wake up and go into Boo's room. BB is going to ask Boo whether she wants to come with her to the waterfall and Boo says no and continues her 'beauty sleep'. BB then packs her backpack, preparing for her adventure. This will not take too long to film :)

Digitopia

Imagery in 'Digitopia' is all based around hands and surrealism. In this film, I see many hands. Hands were creatures, hands were body parts, hands were wings, hands had crowns on them. This use of imagery was an excellent visual cue that the artist had a fetish for hands. There was also great use of pre drawn backgrounds in contrast with the animated parts of the film e.g. The hands. The film featured use of stopmotion with help from photoshop to draw in the robotic arm and show the blood circulation. Many pictures were cloned (repeated)

The mood portrayed in this video is very calm and relaxed. The soundtrack by Goldfrapp is beautiful and catchy, the singer has a soothing voice. The movement of the hands is very smooth and fluid, aiding in creating this calm notion. The laboratory scenes with examination of the hands and parts of the body is suggesting that our system is running smoothly, it is a utopia. The reassurance of this may keep people constantly worried about their health (hypochondriacs) calm. I personally find that the mountains give a calming effect, because they are from nature. Nature is generally placid, and the mountains, although in black and white, are beautiful. This brings me to my next point. If there was more colour in the video, the mood would have changed. The lack of colour gives the film a lack of energy (not in a bad way!) which helps convey the idea of a relaxed and calm mood.

The music soundtrack is by 'Goldfrapp'. The music harmonises well with the video played. When listening to the lyrics, I found that 'utopia' was said a lot. The film itself is called digitopia. A utopia is a perfect world, and that is what the video was trying to achieve. There was clearly a lot of editing in the movie (most was probably done in photoshop!) many parts of the movie would have to be cut and pasted into different places in order to form a sequence. A good example on the editing of the movie is the fact that towards the end, one person is filmed doing the dance, but is cloned digitally (with height and width adjusted) to make it look like there are many people, and they are all synchronised with one another. The movie is very surreal, so the person commanding the hands would obviously have to be edited in, as would all of the hands, eyes, drawings, objects, human head (so in summary, most of the aspects!)

Mayterek's use of colour, shading, shape, fluid movement and scale were all used successfully to create a deep and meaning film called 'Digitopia'. The use of colour was very limited. However, this proved successful in creating a calm atmosphere. The electric blue background was used consistently in Digitopia. There was also use of red to show the blood circulation, essential to allow the audience to understand what is happening. Red was also used in other scenes in the laboratory. The foreground was in black and white to allow it to contrast against the background, thus bringing the audience attention to what is happening in the foreground instead of the background. Mayterek used scale to help create the world of surrealism in her film. Some hands were larger than others, like when they were creatures. One hand was significantly larger, hinting to us that the smaller of the creatures was maybe a baby. Another example in which scale is used is in the part of the film where Mayterek was wings. She uses her own hands in the front of her body, and larger hands are used on her back. Mayterek also experiments on a very large arm in one of the laboratory scenes. The hand was much bigger than her and this added to the effect of surrealism. Mayterek created shapes out of hands. She made creatures out of them, which were really amazing to watch in action. She made hands fly, sway, open, close and she made them transportation vehicles. All of these actions looked different from the others. The fact that so much could be made out of hands really was fascinating. The hands had very soft shading, which provided the illusion of 3rd dimension. The softness of the hands also created mood, for if the shading was sharper, the mood would have somewhat altered. The soundtrack in the film was repetitive and calm, with 'utopia' constantly appearing in the sound. The film can be interpreted as a music video for the song, as it seems as though the video was intended for the soundtrack, especially when the lyrics are 'it's a strange day... no shapes or colours' because it is a strange day- many shapes are made out of hands and only 2 colours are used, the rest of the film being in black and white. The soundtrack was powerful and well composed. There were no signs of editing in the music.

My interpretation is that everything is possible with our hands and our imagination. With our hands and minds we can create a 'utopia' in which medicine is very much effective and our world is at peace. Close to the start, a human head is shown emitting signals into the air with hands receiving it. The hands are symbols for people. The flying hands are people that are still looking for something to do. Medicine is a big part of the video, and using the symbol of our hands, we can interpret that the artist is implying that the stake of the world is in our hands, the evolution of medicine is in our hands, the future is in our hands. I also think that it conveys the meaning that our body is a utopia. It is perfect. The body has a heart, arms, legs, circulation, immunity and digestion. I believe the whole video is based around imagination, our utopian body and the fact that anything is possible with our hands.

My mum thinks this piece is beautiful. She thinks it is about the importance of the human body and its significance in the world. She thought the idea was clever, and that Matreyek is very creative and talented.
A few of my friends found this video repetitive and slightly boring at times. They think the hand idea is well executed, however, some of the parts they did not understand the meaning of. They believed the video was about the power of hands.

I think the intended audience for Matreyek are people of a certain maturity (teenagers or older) because my mum, who is obviously very mature, found this video spectacular to watch and appreciated the depth and meaning of this film. My friends, who are 13-14, found the film rather boring at times. They did not fully understand the meaning of the film. So, from my own personal research I had gathered, I believe that the film was intended for mature audience; possibly teenagers.

Progress

I have refilmed over the weekend. The film is now brighter and the camera is stiller. I think I have completed about 70% of my film. Now all I need to do is closing credits and the 2 scenes in BB's house. And the music.

My moviee

My miserable first DAY of semester

Mr Powell decided to be evil and make me reshoot my whole film which took me 3 days to do. I am really upset right now. I feel like punching the wall and trashing my bathroom. I don't think my film will be as good when I film it again. Thanks Mr Powell. So, I will be borrowing a laptop over the weekend to reshoot it. AGAIN.

I am miserable.

That's my youtube channel and I'll be regularly uploading videos of BB and my progress.

I've taken a laptop home over the holidays to do my animation. I believe I will have over 50% done after they finish. This is fantastic news because it means that I will not be behind.

I have begun practising (see youtube) and hopefully will begin filming the main part for the whole of tomorrow.

At the rate I am going now, I will meet my deadline.

My progress

So far, my progress is ok. I've done the start of the movie in animation-ish. I'm shooting most of the movie at home using stopmotion.

I've encountered a major problem- BB has lost her antennae. I have solved this problem by using BB's identical twin, also named BB. So, with this problem solved, I will continue filming.

I've done Boo's room- purple wallpaper with a poster of a cute eraser with a heart, window with the illusion that the sea is outside and an empty bookshelf as well as a bed.

I will film this scene next week when I bring Boo in.

What am I doing?

I have chosen to work with stop motion to do most of my project because I feel that I can make a much more interesting film with it. My film will mostly be shot at home... in my bathroom. BB lives in a 'house' at the top of a chair in the bathroom. I will shoot the parts where BB is in the house at school to make up for the time I am here. The parts where BB is making the journey to the 'fountain' will be shot at home. With my trusty friend blue tack, I will be able to give the illusion that BB is climbing the 'mountains'! The fact that BB's 'car' is a phone also gives the illusion of surrealism. I think that surrealism is essential when working with stop motion, otherwise the stop motion will look too much like real life and it will lose the whole effect. At the start, I am using animation-ish to put the title's in. There are separate letters that I have imported into animation-ish to have an exciting approach to the film. At the end, BB climbs up onto the sink and gets ready to go for a swim when I come in and wash my hands- all this soap drops in the pool and then BB gets sad and goes away to the house, upset that the adventure is over.

I really hope my stop motion video will work!

Here is my storyboard:

BB eraser adventures- the video

Projects

This is the first video of BB and Meghna's phone. My stop motion movie is going to be fairly epic- I want it to be about BB and the other erasers in my house. In the video above, BB is being chased by indeed, a VERY hungry mobile phone! BB tries to get around this obstacle, but realises that if she doesn't want to be eaten, she will have to provide the phone with something to eat, so she provides it with a frangipani which the mobile devours instead of BB. BB is very relieved, and the phone is happy. The phone lets BB climb onto it as a token of thanks and BB rides away on it.

The phone was meghna's and BB is property of me.

I have also made another video of the 'hand' attacks BB which is too realstic in my opinion, as the hand pushes BB to the point where is looks too video like.

I'm pretty much certain that I will use BB and co to star in the adventures of the rubbers. With the use of photoshop, I could make the video look really good.

I don't think I will do animation-ish because Mr Powell didn't like George the blob... He said the spiderweb didn't look right when clearly, by the use of imagination, it can!!!

I'm not sure what I want to do- one big epic adventure or a smaller adventure + George the blob animation.

I still have a bit of time to think about it, but I'm definitely doing the eraser adventure idea.

I'm uploading my video to youtube at the moment!

This term...

Hello again,

In week 1, Mr Powell introduced us to animation-ish. He showed us how to create a bouncing ball. I tried drawing mine on the trackpad (we didn't have the tablets yet!) but unforunately I failed in producing a circular shape. I was pretty frustrated but luckily the next lesson... THE TABLETS CAME!!! They were such a life saver! I drew a really quick animation of 'Bob and his magic shoes' which I'm planning to finish. It looks fairly basic. I feel more comfortble with the program than last year, since we only did animation-ish for the last 3 weeks of the term!

Next lesson we're drawing walking characters which I'll probably find tedious (like the fromu in the first few weeks of last term) but it'll be essential for a good final product! (like my Mennemmas!)

Right now, I'm trying to get a good inspiration. I already know what I want to do for my stop motion video but not for animation-ish yet.

I'm thinking of maybe doing George the blob who doesn't know who he is and he goes around the world trying to be another animal and seeing which one he likes most. George ends up morphing into a ___ snowman? Turtle? Okapi?

Facts about Ka'truss

Ka'truss is a planet the size of Mars. It is a bright purple planet even though really, it has a blue environment. Ka'truss is the home of several species of creatures, one of them being Mennemmas; primitive jungle-dwelling and creative humanoids. Mennemmas are adapted to the interesting conditions that Ka'truss throws at them. Here's facts about the planet

  • We would not survive on most of Ka'truss, it would either be too hot in summer or too cold in winter (392 degree Celsius weather in summer and -392 degree weather in winter!)

  • Mennemma skin and seed layer are adapted to the extreme change! When it's hot, their skin becomes slimy, thick and cool to keep a Mennemma cool and not overheated. In winter, their skin goes hard and tough to not let any heat out and keep the Mennemma warm and healthy.

  • A human has a chance of surviving in the middle of the planet were many Mennemmas live. There is not a large temperature change (-29 degrees Celsius in winter and about 40 degrees Celsius in summer)

  • Ka'truss land is made from hardened lava. Lava still flows in certain parts of the planet

  • Mennemmas camouflauge in the blue environments

  • A Mennema's eyes can change when stalking prey and camouflauging
  • The purple is actually the thick CO2 atmosphere and a layer of extreme purple ozone unidentified to humans yet

I hope you know more about Ka'truss (and I hope it helps you understand some features of the Mennemma!

Amazing photoshop avatars!

These are the avatars that other people have created. I really like the rhino one and I believe that experimenting with fruit skins leaves interesting impressions. I like the spider x onion hybrid too as it can be mistaken for a real spider species! I think if the photoshopper blended the onion more then it would look more natural and believable. Nevertheless, the artist did a fine job. I think the artist who created the frog did it flawlessly. When I first looked at it, I couldn't believe my eyes! The photoshopper made it look amazingly realistic! Simply flawless. I quite like the Obama one. It looks so realistic! I like the way the artist used the clone brush to remove the nose and the transformation of the eyes. The spots work well, too! Obama makes my Mennemmas look like nothing!

Reflection

I really enjoyed working with photoshop. Through all the frustration and stress I faced, there was always the fun and creative side which I loved to experience. I had never worked with photoshop before, and masking seemed totally new to me! I had a bit of trouble with masking before. I used to accidentally unlink the masks and cause myself all sorts of stress! Hue and saturation was great to work with, especially the colourizing and saturation- very fun to play around with and create cool designs. I began to get very annoyed with creating layers! They took a while to make and really became tedious towards the end of my piece! Luckily, I didn't experience too many problems with it. Sometimes, I accidentally forgot to inverse and pressed delete when I was using a marquee and got a heart attack. Luckily, good old history panel was there to help me! Whenever I did something wrong which I couldn't undo, I was very relieved that the history panel existed. Otherwise, I'd be failing this assignment at the moment! The clone brush took a while to get used to. I was annoyed that I had to keep selecting the area I wanted cloned because I sometimes ended up getting hair on a nose! I found that frustrating but I became really good at it towards the end. (If you couldn't already tell, I cloned out the nose!) I also found changing the hue and saturation was very easy for Linaghi because her hair was blonde and did not need much saturation so it looked more natural when I coloured it. However, Myling, having darker hair, needed a slightly more saturation. I found changing it annoying and it took me a few lessons to finally be happy with it. The skin feature (seeds) worked well. I had difficulty with brushes though. Mr Powell helped me with it, and he said to use a soft brush and reduce the flow. I found that the skin looks much better and more natural and a lot easier to do than use a hard brush with 100% flow and make the outline perfect. I used the soft brush for the hair on both of my avatars. If you look back on a photo of me with purple hair, and one of my avatar's, then you'll see a difference in the hair straight away. I used a hard brush in the first image as well as too much gradient and saturation so it looked artificial. On my avatar, let's say Linaghi, I used a soft brush and not too much saturation to improve the realisticess of my avatar. I had to experiment with certain flows to find which brush worket best in my situation, and it was usually 58% that did the job. I found that working with opacity saves a lot of time and the opacity I used for the seeds on my Mennemmas was perfect and added the effect I desired- bumps around the seeds and a slightly red-ish tinge. Overall, I rate Linaghi 9.5/10. If I could improve her, I'd definitely add more alien effects so she could look even more sci-fi than she already is. I rate Myling 8.5/10. If I were to change him, I would definitely change the pink tinge where the nose used to be and make it more like Linaghi's- blue and blended. Linaghi's dark eyes helped convey her calm nature, and her crossed arms help her look serious and smart. Myling is very energetic, and has bright eyes. By lookng at them, one can tell that he is excited and energetic. I used hue and saturation of the eyes to help deliver their personalities.

I liked the idea of making an avatar, but how they were made really frustrated me at times- especially when things did NOT work out! The paragraph above will explain what I found frustrating. As annoying and repetitive as it was, the emu and frog hybrid we made for the first fortnight or so really helped me understand masking and opacity as well as hue and saturation. If not for the fromu, then I would not have had the understanding of masks and layers that I do now. I learn by watching a professional (Mr Powell) do it first instead of wandering into the mist and not doing the right thing I was meant to do. I found one-on-one help was fantastic and suited everybody's needs. Demonstrations were essential when introducing us to new topics and combined with one-on-one help suits my needs. I completed the task quite simply by listening and looking at Mr Powell's demonstrations on the smart board, then attempted to do the action on photoshop. If I failed, I would write my name on the help list and Mr Powell would show me how to do it one-on-one which was great and helped me achieve my final avatar. He showed me the clone brush and the soft brush which I probably would not have discovered in time for the submission date.

I think I used my time wisely somewhere in the middle of the term. In the first two weeks, I must admit, my friends and I were obsessed with photobooth and got easily distracted by the little gadget! However, towards the middle when we got our assignments, we started using time wisely and spend 95% of the time fully focussed on our avatars. Towards the end of the term when my avatar was complete, I found myself helping my friends and working on Blogger. I was 79% concentrated then. I started writing my reflection earlier this week but didn't get much done because I was pondering whether to submit my avatar or not and whether I had done enough to please Mr Powell and myself. I started my blog, then I forgot about it before having an epiphany and realising I had a blog which I needed to post on! I kept it up-to-date for the rest of the term, and I won't do something stupid like that again. I managed to save everything in PSD and JPEG and didn't lose any files and I believe my saving method was effective, and I saved a separate file for each avatar. This was effective so that if I make a mistake, I can track back and start again on, let's say, update 5. I am quite pleased with the resulting avatar. You can find my ratings and reasonings in the first paragraph. If I did have my time all over again, I would make sure to use it wisely and remove the nose better to make it look more natural. I like my avatar design and believe that it's very interesting, original and quirky.

~Annie K

Hmmm...?

I'm unsure whether to do a background or not for Myling... I tried but it's too complicated but it does contribute to his personality! I think I'll ask Mr Powell in the last lesson tomorrow. Until then, I need to do my reflection! [which is almost finished]

Personality profiles

Linaghi aka Heidi Klum is a Mennemma from the planet Ka'truss. Linaghi lives in a hut she constructed herself. It was carefully engineered to fit her standards and to be large enough to contain her two daughters and husband. She is generally calm and quiet. However, she can be a bit fussy when something does not turn out the way she expected it to! Linaghi is quite active and likes to exercise and problem solve. She can be bipolar sometimes if everything happens too fast or when she's frustrated under pressure but that's only on a rare occassion. Linaghi is quite smart and thinks outside of the box and therefore is considered of high status and value so she wears a white shirt/blouse to indicate that. Linaghi's tattoo is usually dull to reflect her personality- calm and placid. It would become brighter if she was aggravated, distressed and took on a energetic character. Linaghi's tattoo is similar to her great grand mother but Linaghi's has a curve inside the inner circle. In three words, Linaghi is quiet, smart and calm.

Myling aka excited boy is also a Mennemma from Ka'truss. He is a child, and children especially at his stage are usually highly energetic and active. Myling lives with his parents in the middle of Ka'truss. He has no siblings and desires to be left an only child. Myling is an active little boy who loves to imagine everything as something else, like the floor is dirt (the floor in Ka'truss is actually lava in some places! The seeds on the skin help keep the skin cool and insulate their skin so they won't be burned by the lave) He is very social and has many friends. Myling is not the brightest child of his species, but he certainly has a talent for art. Myling is generally happy and energetic. However, if something upsets him he could go hysterical and restless. He can be a bit judgemental and does get jealous quite easily. Myling is grumpy when he does not get sleep and when his skin goes to slimy! Myling has approximately the same size tattoo as Linaghi but each Mennamma's design is different and each is unique and used as a form of identity.

Overall, the Mennemmas of Ka'truss are athletic and creative creatures. They all have unique talents. As explained in Myling's personality profile, the Mennemma seeds are actually a protective layer to keep their skin protected against nature and lava which is very common in Ka'truss. Mennemma skin does start to peel at certain stages of their lives in which they much stay in shelter before the skin grows back as venturing out could potentially hold dangerous consequences. Mennemma children are very active and energetic during their first 30 years of life (30 years = approx 10 years on our planet, to find out how old you are as a Mennemma simply multiply your age by 3! I'm 39) After the age of 30, Mennemmas become very calm and relaxed before their life becomes a balance of both at the age of 64. An interesting feature of the Mennemma is that:

  • They have no nose, but they breathe through an organ found on their back which supplies their lungs with CO2 (they breathe CO2 not oxygen!)

  • Their ears are also their organs used for smell

  • When Mennemmas blush, their feet turn yellow

  • Mennemma tattoos are barely visible when they are depressed

  • When a Mennemma is angry, their ears will turn red too!

Mennemmas are very fascinating creatures!

An inspitational story

On a fine day sometime in the middle of the term, I was pondering life's many questions. My mother called me into the kitchen and I subconsciously followed her command. She offered me tea and I rejected but I eyed a strawberry. I took it with my two fingers and examined it. 'Twas then when a light shone on me and I realised... It was the chosen- no, it was actually the ideal skin feature I wanted on my avatar, both alien and interesting, I tried the idea and out popped Heidi Klum, my final submitted avatar!

'Strawberry skin? How preposterous!' The other children chanted. But by creating Heidi Klum, I believe the strawberry has worked well. Don't you think?

I was inspired by a previous picture that I photoshopped when I did her hair. I attempted to photoshop my own hair... but it looked very fake. I decided to try and do it on Heidi, to make her a violette instead of a blonde. I think it worked quite well, and complements her skin colour.

The lips... I really wanted to make them contrast! I tried different colours but I found that yellow simply was best. No other colour stood out as much (without making the lips look super weird) I think they make Heidi look a bit quirky.

What inspired the eyes, I hear you ask. Well, they're from an actual animal... but they're slightly bigger than in the original image. I decided to colour them purple to match the hair. Mr Powell said to put them behind the strawberry skin then mask it and I did so. I think it looks more natural. The eyes don't glow as much and suit Heidi more.

I thought rainbow eyelashes would make the eyes stand out, and they do! The eyelashes are so big and multi-coloured that they attract a LOT of attention to the eyes and therefore, the eyes are one of Heidi's most visual features. When I applied the eyelashes, they didn't cover the area I wanted them to and instead of stretching, I decided to simply add extensions to them. Now I think that they are big and turned out how I wanted them to.

Where's Heidi's nose? I hear you ask. Well, I felt that it just wasn't working the way I wanted to and I decided to get rid of it! It makes Heidi look more alien and strange. I think it looks awesome!

Heidi's 'tattoo' is quite faint, because she is quite relaxed. If you look at excited boy, he has a very visible tattoo because he is excited!

I didn't have much inspiration either than that strawberry!

A personal reflection

Wow, looking back now, I have realised that because I took home a laptop, I have greatly improved on my avatar. Last week, I was at the finishing point in my Heidi Klum avatar.

I took a laptop home again this weekend and did very fine touch-ups on Heidi. I believe that now, I'm ready to submit her.

If I did not take a laptop home last week and this week, then I would be stressing right now to the extreme! So this is a shout out to Mr Crawley and the librarians for introducing the overnight borrowing and also Mr Powell for signing my form!

Todat I worked on my excited child, too. I think he needs very fine touch-ups before he's submitted.

I felt that my species needed something extra. I didn't show it on Heidi, but since my excited child is displaying his tongue, I felt the urge to make it rainbow and stripy. It used to be blue and I think that he looks more alien now, and if anything, better and more complex.

In my next post I'll show you what inspired my quirky creations and how I made my final decision on what my species would look like!

The unveiling of avatar 2!

Bonjour fellow bloggers... or should I say Fa'rae gry blikker!

Today in class I worked on avatar 2- Myling.

Myling is a little boy who is showing surprise, a common emotion in children his age!

I must admit, he is awefully adorable... at least before his ultimate makeover.

Here he is as of 16/3/10

As you can see, Myling shows a clear resemblance to another of his species- Linaghi. The male Mennemmas generally have smaller skin features (seeds in this instance) than that of female Mennemmas such as Linaghi. Children, especially, have smaller features than they will have as adults.

Myling is not complete yet. I need to do touch ups and give him a 'tattoo' and eyelashes. I might also give Myling some other features that Linghai lacks. e.g. Myling has brighter eyes than Linghai (confusing names, I know, but I'm getting into the sci-fi theme and attempting to learn Klignon while I'm at it!)

How do you like him so far? Any suggestions would be appreciated :)

The unveiling of Homer!

Homer Simpson- your typical donut-eating no-brainer. He pays no attention whatsoever to what he eats- Homer simply eats whatever he finds, his favourite food usually being a donut!

But wait!

A new image has been leaked onto the internet...

Homer...

eating a PIE!!!

I did this quickly one lesson. I really like the Simpsons and thought it'd be funny to make Homer eat something other than a pie. Simply by masking, I have made Homer eat a healthier choice. I've dedicated this post to the unveiling of the photo!

Avatar 1

Hey look! Is it an alien? Is it a monster? No, It's Heidi Klum or Linaghi a Mennemma from the planey Ka'truss! (uhh I just thought of that at the top of my head)

Notice anything different?

Well...

  • I imprived Linaghi's eyes and blended them with the skin more. This has made them look realistic, and not like the 'glasses' she once wore. To do this, I put them behind the skin-feature layer and then simply masked it and used the black soft brush to erase the bits on the eyes. The eyes now look darker and more realistic. The ones before appeared to glow- something you don't see everyday!

  • I did the usual touch up-s and made the skin appear more natural rather than a mask simply by doing an outline with a soft brush. The soft brush blends everything in and saves A LOT of time! (but can be tedious to the amateur)

So... how do you like Linaghi/Heidi NOW?

who is THAT??

This is my updated avatar- Heidi. I decided to change Heidi's eyes. They suit her more (no offence Heidi) and make her look more alien. I added eye lashes to make her eyes look more natural. I also did some fine details around her arms and neck so her skin is seed-y in the right places. If you haven't alread noticed, I've decided it was best to remove her nose. I think it gives the picture an alien feel to it. The nose didn't seem to work with Heidi in the particular cirscumstances. I think she's almost finished! My second avatar will be surprise. I've decided to ditch my angry man and go with an excited boy! I didn't save it as a jpeg but stay tuned for my next post or few!

Avatar update!

Look! It's Heidi! How much has she changed from the last time you saw her? Since when did she dye her hair purple, wore yellow lipstick, had an odd eye and contracted a rare skin disease? Since I photoshopped her, of course!

I liker her skin, especually on the arms. Heidi's yellow lips really contrast and stand out from the dark colourst I used on her. Her purple hair compliments her skin and her odd eyes are quite strange, too. The species shall be from the planet PAND- I mean uhh Tiffany and co? No, I haven't thought of the name of the species as I haven't done my second avatar either. I've made a start but I'm unsure whether or not I would like to continue with it. I might select a different image where the face is more dominant and it's more high res.

On Heidi, I am unsure about the:

  • eyes... should I give her animal eyes? I was thinking of goat or a tarsier as they both have out-of-the-ordinary eyes!

  • eye brows... should I give her big bushy eyebrows or amazing eye lashes? If I do both, they would clash

  • her emotion. I'm pretty sure she looks content but I still need reassurance

I'm looking for my second image. Tell me if I should keep it but I'll do another one anyway just in case it looks better, and I might submit that too!

Isn't he gorgeous?

Recents

I converted some previous photoshop experiments to JPEG so I can look at them without photoshop. Today I looked back on everything I did and wow, I have improved so much! I can do anything now, really. The first creature I created was my fromu, Bobby 19 v8. He took a whole lesson to create. Now, I can make something similar in seconds.

Cute, huh?

I've also photoshopped a kangaroo with lion-like features. It's not the most attractive creature you'll find but it's still pretty cool!

How did I make it? Simply by finding a picture of a lion and pasting it into the kangaroo picture. From there, I lowered the opacity and I pressed 'Apple T' for transform and played around with sizing until the eye of the lion alligned with the eye of the kangaroo, and so does the nose. Once they were at the desired position, I masked it and used the black paint brush to erase the areas I didn't need. If I (which I did) erased bits I didn't want erased, I simply used the white brush to make the spot(s) reappear. I decided to do orange stripes on the face and did it by using the black and white brushes. This isn't done to the best of my abilities, as I wasn't very confident in photoshop when I first started!

Look! Purple hair! (image is small because I don't want stalkers : if you want the image, I can send it to you) My hair is medium brown and I made it purple! Sure, it looks unnatural but I finally have the hair colour I want! I tried hue and saturation, but because of my hair it didn't work so I had to 'bleach' it. To do so, I simply adjusted the curves and voila, my hair was considerably lighter! From then on, I went to hue and saturation and... it worked! I made my hair purple and then I just had to mask it and get rid of all the bits I didn't like. Then I went around the edges with a soft brush and ta-da! I have awesome hair all thanks to PHOTOSHOP!

Haven't posted in a while...

Haven't posted in a while, I know but this post is going to cover for it!

We got our assignments, and we have to make our avatars. After experimenting with different animals (and even myself!) I have come up with my inspiration:

Image 1: emotion is content. I am using Heidi Klum as my victim. I am going to make her eyes very big and purple, have a 'tattoo' on her forehead, give her whiskers and animal ears (maybe) and make her teeth small, and possibly mouth, too. Her skin is probably going to be a very pale blue. I'm going to change the background if I can to a rainforest if there's time.

Image 2: emotion is ager. I am going to try and persuade my collegues to allow me to take photos of them showing this very distinct emotion. Her cheeks will glow red as a sign of anger, as well as her ears.

As well as filling you in with my avatar idea, I'm going to show you some work I did in previous lessons.

I bought my guitar in (as well as the amp) haha only joking. I did this very quickly. My parents were getting me a guitar that I picket out. I thought it'd be funny to quickly mask the guitar over and dreadlocks and the amp. I have it now and it's a very nice sounding guitar.
I started on my avatar with Heidi Klum as my first victim. I don't really like the way she looks right now though, so I'm going to have to do some intense photoshopping! She looks content. For my 2nd victim, I am going to find a picture of an angry man and do the same as I did with Heidi Klum, except do a more masculine design instead of the flower-type tattoo on Heidi's forehead and do green lips instead of yellow to signify gender change.
I'll keep you updated on my avatar. Until then, bye!

YOU got me feeling emotions- jealousy, disappointment and surprise!

http://images.paraorkut.com/img/funnypics/images/j/jealousy_poster-12996.jpg
http://www.rapidintimacy.com/images/jealous-girl.jpg
http://cm1.theinsider.com/media/0/92/21/Jealousy_1.0.0.0x0.375x500.jpeg

Jealousy can be created by narrowing your eyes and keeping a neutral expression on your face. It can also be improved by pouting slightly. The eyebrows also sag into the eyes, like anger but not as dominant. The man at the bottom seems both jealous and sad... in other words he is both jealous and sad at someone because they could be better at him, or maybe his girlfriend left and he is jealous of her new boyfriend and sad that he let her go... My guesses are probably all wrong but anyway...

DISAPPOINTMENT

http://ladiesdotdotdot.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/cavs-kid.jpg

http://www.glenisk.com/uploads/images/disappointment1.jpg

http://fotosa.ru/stock_photo/Zefa%20RF/p_2413500.jpg

Disappointment is a cross between sadness and anger. It is created by keeping a straight face but in photo 1, the boy's mouth is opened slightly in an oval shape. In all 3 photos, disappointment in shown by the gestures; all 3 people have their hands behind their head, or supporting it. This shows that the people are feeling a bit low, so their hands are used to display a sign of frustration and disappointment.

SURPRISE

http://dealcetera.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/surprise.jpg
http://www.biojobblog.com/surprise(1).jpg

http://www.ideachampions.com/weblogs/surprise.jpg

Surprise is shown in these three images mainly via the mouth. In 2 of the images, hand gestures are used. In the first image, the hands are flat and parralel on either sides of the mouth, which is wide open and in an 'O' shape. (looks like this horizontal- :O ) The eyes also significantly widen giving them quite a large appearance. In turn, the eyebrows of the person go up with the widened eyes.
